School Room Design – Back to School at Home

September is a month that in a lot of ways seems to mark a new year. Especially for those who are going to school. Some of you know that I homeschool my children. This month we are back to school at home!

I thought I would share with you the design of our school room. This room was very important in our home design planning. We knew we were a homeschooling family, so having a room for this purpose is very important. Fortunately, this house has a back sunroom area that fits the need perfectly. When we bought this house the first thing we did was remove wallpaper in every room. Did you catch that? Every. Single. Room. So this room’s re-decorating began the same as all the others, with the removal of 2 to sometimes 3 layers of wallpaper. Did you read that? Two to three layers of wallpaper in every single room. After doing something like this whenever you see wallpaper your eye sorta starts to twitch a little if you know what I mean. :/ just kidding. . . no I’m not kidding. (queue screeching, high pitched music that gets louder and louder)

I decided to open up a stair wall that is the back of the room, stairs going down to the basement behind it. I put in shelves for books and craft/school supplies. Peg board on each end provides a place to hang containers for pencils and scissors using peg board hooks.

I painted the stair wall shelf cubbies with the Sheer Mist form Clark and Kensington, The trim and pegboard I left white. I actually painted this first before the rest of the room.

The color I chose to paint the room is Sheer Mist By Clark and Kensington. This color is a perfect compliment to the greens and blues showing up in the windows of this room from sky and trees and bushes outside around the house. I painted over the brown taupe that wrapped around the bottom part of the walls a glossy white that is easy to wash. This color scheme is light and airy and the colors go well with the green trees outside or the snowy landscape of winter. The large windows give this room lots of natural light.

The room has changed a little over the years. This is our 6th year living in this house. Recently, we added some new school chairs with attached desks. These black metal ones are sturdy and match the decorative metal wall piece from Hobby Lobby on the wall behind. Some floor bag poufs are good for resting feet on or propping on while reading a book. I also decided that the top of the stair wall is a good place to display family pictures

We spend a lot of time in this room and it gets pretty messy in here, books being sprawled out on the floor, bits of cut up paper on the ground from a craft project, etc. It is so nice having a space dedicated for that purpose.

Here is a photo of the kids a few years back when they were younger than they are now! Good memories in this room. Mom does have to use her teacher voice sometimes, but all and all, it’s a happy place.

Here is a more recent one from last school year. Must have been cold that day. LoL <3

I hope this post gives you some ideas on how to organize your school or craft room!
